When it comes to ostomy surgeries, it happens both in adults and children. When your child is an ostomate, you need to be a little more focused on his/her school life. Well, ostomy operation does not mean that your kid cannot go back to school or enjoy the fun activities and fun learning techniques in the school.
Well, as a parent, you will have a lot of responsibilities when your kid is an ostomate. You have to make your child comfortable. Kids always think that surgery means a lot. Every child is scared of operations, stitches, and injection. Therefore, they feel vulnerable after surgery. Thus, you should tell your kid that his/her life will not change. It is a usual thing for a patient. The ostomy surgery does not mean that your kid is going to give up her/his dream. He can do his/her homework, he can play, he can exercise, swim, and any other fun activity he/she wants to follow. In the earlier days of the ostomy operation, a kid can feel something different and change in life. But, after sometimes, he/she can get back to normal life.
The vital role in your kid’s ostomy is the management and use of ostomy supplies. The ostomate kid should know the use of each ostomy tool. Apart from the usage, he/she should know how he can organize the ostomy kit. An ostomate kid should know when to change the bag when to clean the ostomy bag and peristomal skin. Moreover, a kid should learn how to apply the ostomy adhesive, remover, and a new pouch. In a school, a kid has to change and empty the ostomy bag. As a kid spends seven to eight hours in a school. Thus, he cannot use the same ostomy bag for such a long time. He/she must change the ostomy pouch if using a drainable ostomy bag, then he must know how to empty it and re-use it.
Parents Role in the Life of an Ostomate Child
Parents are the most concerned species on this planet. Parents can do anything for the betterment of their children. Even parents can feel the pain of the injury of their kid. Well, when a kid goes through the ostomy surgery, the real challenges are for the parents. Parents have to make their kids comfortable with their new life. Parents have to make their children believe that they can follow up on their dreams. Even after the ostomy operation, they do not have to change their lifestyle. Apart from oral and moral support, parents have to organize the ostomy supplies for their children.
As a parent, you should organize a separate ostomy kit for your kid’s school. When your kid has an ostomy surgery, you should go to his/her school and tell the medical history to the teachers. Moreover, you should talk to the school nurse regarding the medical condition of your kid. You should tell the school teacher and nurse that if your kid faces any problem, how they can deal with the ostomy supplies and kid’s psyche. Apart from the staff's help, you should make your child strong enough to manage every situation. He/ she should know, either the ostomy is full or leaking. Your kids should know when to change the ostomy pouch and how to clean the peristomal skin. Always fill the ostomy kit with the tools your kids are comfortable with. For example, if your kids do not use the adhesive remover wipes, you should put adhesive remover spray in the kit. If your kid wants to use the ostomy powder, then do not give them the ostomy deodorant. Simply, take care of your kid’s choice.
