Healthcare is a big topic this election year. We all want to be able to get the best available for the best prices. It doesn't matter what side you are on for how it happens, but this is a topic that I tape personally and that I try to incorporate the best healthcare into my own life. The debates of how to be able to see a doctor are a little less tangible to me than what products I am going to be using on a daily basis. This is because I have a stoma. Yes, that means that I have an ostomy bag on me at all times and that I do things a few times a day a little bit differently. But for the most part, my entire life is pretty much the same and that is because I have worked on not settling with poor products and knowledge.
The most important part of life is learning and continuing to grow. This goes for all aspects of your life from your diet, to working out and also the medical products or pills you may be taking or using. The fact is that being healthy and being able to live a happy life are linked. This is the reason why I am always trying to find the best gear for me. This has taken me a long time to figure out a good system for my life, but it wasn't because I was using bag gear, just not the perfect gear for me. That is why I want to go through a few things that I do and have done to keep up on the possibilities of what is available to me.
When I first learned that an Ostomy Surgery was in my future I got a bit depressed. Then after it was done my Ostomy Nurse was pivotal on giving me hope and showing me how my life was really not going to be that different as long as I learned how to do some things. Really she was right and after learning the basics of how things worked and getting ideas of how to do incredible things even though I have a stoma my life took off.
My first task was to follow my Nurse's advice and talk to my local pharmacist. I was really afraid to do this because it seemed so weird. But I just asked for them to walk me through their products and maybe give some advice on why they sell different brands and for what reason. The basis for all their decision was based off of past customers and what they like and use the most. The numbers don't lie they said and she also talked about going to a few conferences every few years to keep up with new products and to see what may be available in the future.
She told me to try new products by calling up the manufactures because they usually give free samples to see if the new product works. This was great because I was able to always be looking for the best product and well I will admit that bonus of free testing made me a loyal customer too. So it was a win-win, and still is! So don't settle, keep learning and trying to be the best you can be.
