1. Understand the Mission
OELCs are designed to encourage students to lead environmental initiatives in their schools and communities. The focus is on sustainability, conservation, and leadership development, with strong ties to UNF’s Institute of Environmental Research and Education (IERE).
2. Secure a Faculty Sponsor
Every chapter needs a teacher or staff member to serve as an advisor. This person will help with logistics, school approval, and communication with IERE.
3. Form Your Leadership Team
Recruit a small group of passionate students to serve as officers (President, Vice President, Secretary, etc.). YELP alumni are encouraged to take leadership roles when possible.
4. Register Your Club
Follow your school’s process for creating a new student organization. This usually involves submitting a proposal, bylaws, and a list of founding members. Talk to your school officials on guidance for starting a club at your school.
5. Connect with UNF IERE
Reach out to IERE (environment@unf.edu) for official recognition and support. We provide:
Branding resources (T Shirts, social media handles, websites and more)
Event ideas and itineraries for campus visits
Networking opportunities with other chapters and environmental leaders
6. Plan Your First Activities
Start with engaging, hands-on projects like:
Campus clean-ups
Nature walks
Environmental Education Workshops
Sustainability challenges
7. Promote Your Club
Create a strong visual identity using Canva templates and social media. Tag @unfenvironment to connect with the broader community.
8. Join the Network
Participate in UNF-hosted events like the Summer Youth Environmental Leadership Summit, where all OELC chapters come together for inspiration and collaboration.
