Instructor’s Affiliation: Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired
Target Audience: 0-5 years old
Lesson Plan Goal: Focus will be on directional/positional concepts-specifically, in/out, over/under, beside/behind and up/down.
Materials Needed: Bring a big box, or laundry basket or something that your child can get in/out of.
An easy description is proprioception is being able to know where your body is in space and where your limbs are in relation to your body. Muscle planning, grading muscle movement, being able to move your arms and legs without necessarily looking at them all falls under proprioception.
Pushing, pulling, jumping, big heavy work movements can all be considered proprioception. Proprioception input is located in the large muscle groups and the spine.
This activity is super easy to set up. Simply place a couple heavier size books into the bottom of the laundry basket. Then have your child pick out some of their favorite toys into the basket.
Then let her/him push! Or tie a rope to the front and have them pull it
When taking your child out for a walk, allow for extra time to explore. Before you leave, place a bracelet of masking tape on your child's wrist sticky side out. As you walk, if you find something interesting, pick it up and attach it to your child's tape bracelet.
After you finished your walk, place the bracelet on the top of a page to create a story based on their walk and what they found.
Now that the weather is getting warmer, place a large container outside and place a variety of containers with water in it. Now verbally encourage your child to pour the various liquids into another container. Explore what method works the best.
