As is obvious from the title, this module focused on 'Project Based Learning'. First we were asked to research into one of the varieties of project-based learning that exists. This task required a basic amount of familiarity with all types in order to make this decision. Through this we were exposed to the extent of the resources that have already been developed and shared and spoke to the breadth of this pedagogy in education around the world.
There are many experts in the area of project-based learning and we were fortunate enough to hear from some through Hangouts on Air.
The final project was to create a project-based learning lesson based around student engagement and agency within a meaningful context and authentic opportunities to showcase student learning.
I can honestly say that I have no real idea about what student agency will look like in my class one year from now. My principal and PYP coordinator are developing an idea that flips the 20% time idea and makes it 80% time instead. This initiative is still in the early stages of development and there are many questions surrounding everything from what the big picture will look like, how this impacts our curriculum, how this impacts assessment, what the day to day looks like and no one has the answers.
Despite being the longest serving grade 5 teacher at the school currently, with 4.5 years under my belt, anyone who is interested in being a part of this initiative has been asked to submit their intentions and then will be interviewed so the “best” team can be selected to take this on. I have registered my interest in this proposal as I am always looking for ways to break the mold and try new things.
If chosen to be a part of this team, the possibilities are boundless. The idea that the confines of the present curriculum structure be broken down and in its place the opportunity for students to drive their learning even more than they do now is immensely exciting. I feel that as teachers of the final year of primary school we have an important role to play in helping to secure the students’ understanding of their own identity and developing confidence in it before they move into the murky waters of adolescence.
Whatever shape and direction this 80/20 time initiative takes, if I am part of it I will be focused on providing the structures that the students need to succeed independently and with confidence, whilst encouraging students to gain a deeper appreciation of who they are as a learner. I will focus on using metacognition to help them recognize and be proud of the character development that has occurred thus far in the story or their life. A significant part of this recognition in themselves will come from the recognition from and interactions they have with others. I want to help them reach outside of their comfort zone and also to reach out to those who have skills and knowledge from whom they can learn.
For me, student agency starts and ends with self-belief and motivation derived from what matters to you.
