Papers that are cited within a paper
Acknowledge previous research, data, specific knowledge, opinions etc.
Found within the paper itself
- Brief abbreviation in text itself
- Full details at the end of paper in Bibliography/ References section

For our project, references are particularly important as they tell us about what other experimental research has been done on the specific molecule

You will often be following references in paper (using hyperlink if on computer or searching journal, then volume, author etc on Google Scholar or Google)

Citations

Papers that cite a particular paper
Tells you about what future research has used the particular paper
Can be found on Google Scholar by selecting “Cited by xxx”

For our project, citations are also very important as they can tell us about future research on the same molecule.

You want to follow citations to find the papers that are on your specific molecule

We need to be able to distinguish between papers and to find new papers
We use Bibtex tags and Bibtex entries

Contains essential information such as

Author
Year
Title
Journal
Page
Volume
Doi (unique identification number)

Bibtex Tag

Molecule.YYA1A2A3 or Molecule.YYAuthor(if sole author)

Molecule → formula (e.g. OH)
YY → last two digits of year
A1 → first two initials of first author’s last name
A2 → first two initials of second author’s last name
A3 → first two initials of third author’s last name
Author → last name of sole author
