OP Girls travel to PA for a Preseason tournament

The OP Rugby Girls started the 2024 season this past weekend. 31 girls, coaches and dozens of families and friends made the trip to State college PA for a friendly tournament. Saturdays three plus hour drive to central PA flew by (maybe it was the abundance of road snacks and car karaoke) and the players and parents were treated to a tour of Penn State University with the Penn state Rugby club. Thanks to Coach Kate Daley for being such wonderful hosts and Coach Cantorna for setting this up. (and the highlight stop at the creamery). Post campus tour, the club headed back to the hotel for jersey presentations and some team building. The parents organized dinner and coaches presented jerseys. After dinner the players (and a few parents) showed off their artistic talents with a paint and pass party. Thank you to all the parents who helped make it so memorable.

On Sunday the girls faced the Knightmares (PA), West End (VA) and State College/ Blair United. Many OP players also got in extra rugby and helped fill out other teams' rosters. OP finished ahead on the score board after all three games but more importantly we gained experience, and all the new players got their first taste of rugby. The blustery cold wind forced some ball handling mistakes, and we had a few defensive lapses but overall, a great day of rugby. Thank you to all the parents and fans who made it out in the cold to sport us.

Captain Annie Henrich led the team with 5 tries and 11 conversions. Also scoring tries were Peyton Langworthy (4) Sydney Genek (2) Madi Ward, Gia Fanutti, Aero Geise, Gia Ditto, Haley Fantrazzo, Natalia Phillips and Rookie Sofia LaDuca. Haley Fantrazzo was named the teams tournament MVP. Other highlights on the day were the work rate of Sophia "Savage" Saffrin, Amanda Balthasar and Anna Marusza; the play of Fly Halfs Julia Tills and Sydney Genek; the hard running of Madison "Mo" Moeller, Natalia Phillips, and Tessa Reichmuth; and the overall play of Rookies Maggie Mueller, Nat Ling and Missy Wojtowicz.

Next Up for the Girls: Rugby 7s April 7th @ Syracuse.
