NICE guidance.mp3

NICE guidelines summarise that dressings should provide the optimal environment for wound healing. Advanced dressings are those that do this by simple physical or chemical means, typically by controlling moisture levels (for example, alginate, film, foam, hydrocolloid and hydrogel dressings).

The advanced wound dressings section of the BNF provides information on the types and properties of different advanced dressings, and a table that suggests choices of primary dressing depending on the nature of the wound.

Factors that should be considered when choosing a dressing include:

  1. The stage of wound healing

  2. Amount of exudate

  3. Infection

  4. Odour

  5. The adhesiveness of a dressing (ease of removal)

  6. Irritation caused by the adhesive

  7. Absorption

  8. Frequency of dressing changes

  9. Ease of use of the dressing

  10. Amount of pain at dressing changes

  11. Protection of the surrounding skin

  12. Patient preference

  13. Cost effectiveness

Melginate page 1.mp3

Revamil Melginate dressing contains calcium alginate, which is derived from seaweed. This unique dressing is impregnated with 100% medical grade honey in the centre of the alginate. Therefore, preventing maceration and avoiding further damage to the wound edges. The calcium alginate is woven four times to prevent fibres remaining in the wound upon removal.

Melginate dressings are very easy to apply and remove, can be cut to wound size, reactive on contact with the wound, their structure alters. As the dressing absorbs wound fluid, it changes from a fibrous structure, to a gel. This allows for dressing removal in one piece, making dressing change atraumatic for the patient.

Revamil Melginate dressings are available in two sizes: 5cm x 5cm and 10cm x 10cm. Appropriate for moderate or heavily exuding wounds and requires a secondary dressing. Revamil Melginate should not be used on wounds with no or low exudate, dressing change every 3 days or daily if required, dependent on wound fluid levels.

Revamil Melginate should not be used in conjunction with any other antimicrobial applications, other than, Revamil wound care.
