WHY *THIS* TRIP
to the "Galapagos of the South Atlantic"
to the "Galapagos of the South Atlantic"
So you already know these wildlife meccas are worth visiting… But why go on this particular trip to experience them?
Here are some top reasons to consider:
Spring is impeccable timing for a journey to the islands:
Early season arrivals like ours have far less human company than the more heavily trafficked high-season months that follow (when South Georgia is usually visited on trips that also include Antarctica, leading to more competition for landing sites, etc.)
Landing sites are more pristine and far more photogenic early in the season.
Wildlife is booming & particularly excellent then. See here for a more detailed overview of expected wildlife in each island group mid-spring.
Even without considering avoiding summer crowds, spring means access to more locations in South Georgia. Later in the season, aggressive fur seal behavior prevents landing on many beaches. Prion Island (the renowned wandering albatross sanctuary) also closes in the summer.
In the Falklands, spring weather is generally better & half as rainy as in the summer.
In South Georgia, slightly more variable weather usually results in dramatic light that especially delights photographers.
(*and yes, this is in spring...remember seasons are reversed in the southern hemisphere...)
The state-of-the-art Magellan Explorer was literally custom built for expedition cruising in these waters. You’ll be hard-pressed to find a classier, more impressive or capable vessel of her size. See here for a presentation on the Magellan Explorer, and/or here for photos & specs of the various cabin options.
Antarctica21 could not have wowed us more with their onboard expedition team on our last trips aboard Magellan Explorer. With expertise spanning various fields, they’ll not only keep you safe & comfortable, but you’ll learn more than you thought possible about the land, history, and wildlife of our destinations.
Our group aboard will also exclusively have Open Sky Expeditions photo pro & tour leader Temu Nana as personal host, offering one-on-one instruction & optional photo reviews in addition to prioritizing our group’s needs throughout the trip. Temu will also host a pre-trip webinar/Q&A session to help you photographically prepare for your trip, in addition to remaining available pre-departure for any questions you may have. We challenge you to find a better-priced trip that includes South Georgia. We haven’t found one yet. You'll be traveling on the deluxe Magellan Explorer at a fraction of the daily cost of its Antarctica trips.
For those wary of motion in the ocean, note that we spend considerably less time at sea than other trips that include South Georgia. Compare our trip to the usual route/s of ~95% trips that do South Georgia later in the season together with Antarctica via a lot of time at sea + two Drake Passage crossings.

time at sea comparisons mentioned above:

OUR ROUTE
Route for most trips including South Georgia (& Falklands)
Note that's two Drake Passage crossings above, with the second one even longer than for usual Antarctica trips. (FYI: dotted line is for trips that don't include Falklands)
