"I Can't help but smile when I catch God looking at me through a horse's eyes."
~ Kevin Weatherby, Leader of Save the Cowboy
Open Range Adventures first opened its pastures in May of 2026 on a small farm in Jacksonville, Texas. It was born from a simple set of beliefs shared by Joelene Robinson and Angelia Miller, including the idea that horses have a way of reaching people that nothing else can. Their mission is to do more than just share riding. They yearn to share the magic of blossoming confidence, fufilment, and joy that comes from forging a connection with a good horse.
It doesn't matter if you have never touched a horse before, haven't ridden in years, or have spent half your life in the saddle- ORA has a place for you. Every rider is welcomed with patience, encouragement, and a genuine desire for you to grow in your passions and chase the goals you might have.
ORA moved locations to a facility in Whitehouse, Texas named Blackhawk Creek Ranch in August of 2026. Here, they plan to focus on partnering with Laura Greenlee and her amazing staff and horses to offer riding lessons and brief trail rides to the public. The land is peaceful, the horses are steady, and the atmosphere fostered is one of learning, laughter, and honest horsemanship from the ground up.
With over 30 years of combined experience between the two of them, Ang and Jo have dedicated their time and effort towards training horses and the people who love them. Before every ride, we take time to understand your comfort level, goals, and confidence so we can make sure you are paired with the horse that fits you best and that will help nurture that key connection that is the bond between horse and rider.
At Blackhawk Creek with ORA, you are not just "paying to sit on a horse." You are meeting a partner, establishing and building skills, and becoming part of a community built on integrity, knowledge, and the joy of the ride.
"Give a man to fish, and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime... We teach people how to connect and ride so that they can feed their soul for the rest of their life."
~ Joelene Robinson, 2026
Pictured here on Bubbles, Angelia started riding horses at five, very quickly displaying a passion for them. Some say she might as well have been born on the back of one! She worked hard, proving that her love for horses wasn't a phase, but more so a way of life for her. That mentality led to her getting her first horse at 16- a gray Arabian she came to bond with that became her mount to later compete on in endurance races. Much like many things in life that have to take a backseat when kids come into the picture, anything to do with horses was placed on the backburner until she could finally return to them almost half a decade ago. Now, she enjoys working with horses and helping to show others just how great they can be after starting Open Range Adventures with her dear friend, Joelene. She has a fondness for neutral colors, loves anything chocolate, and her favorite thing about horses is that it gives her a sense of freedom.
Pictured here on Bird, Joelene was raised around horses since she was three- not just in the front yard, but in the barn as well! Her mother and grandfather were horse trainers specializing in western and cutting competition, instilling the love of horses in her from the very beginning. She went on to become a trainer as well in her late high school and early college career, moving on to work under a cutting horse trainer and moving through the show circuit. Chasing shows around the states wasn't for her hometown-loving self, however, so she eventually returned to the place she grew up and settled down roots, later starting Open Range Adventures with her beloved friend, Angelia. She still trains horses here and there, but loves to share her love of learning about them with others through lessons and trail rides. Her favorite color is purple or blue, her favorite time of day is early morning twilight, and what she loves most about horses is their fascinating behaviors.
We currently offer both horsemanship lessons and exposure sessions. Interested in learning more about what these are? Click the button below!
