Art Created by Lenae Silva (You can see my bio on the home page), I've included this art because I am a story teller. I often paint memorial paintings (not always related to drug poisonings), or ideas of strength behind people who are often potrayed in a negative matter. I believe that representation is also an important thing and to see yourself is amazing.
More paintings to come!
*This is a portrait of a friend, Rose, a warrior who is alive and well, and always an inspiration. I feel it's important to emphasize that this is a portrait that represents strength, and that she is not lost <3
As a female decedent of indigenous peoples, specifically Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish) peoples, and also white settlers, the realization that every Canadian town seems to have a "mysterious" story of someone of indigenous ancestry that seemed to have just walked off this earth. Everyone knows the stories in these towns. In our town, Snuneymuxw (Nanaimo), it is currently Lisa Marie Young, a beautiful woman missing since 2002 (Apple Podcast about Lisa). For another moment it was a young, beautiful, 16 year old girl Mikayla Chang, whose remains have been found (CTV NEWS)... I, along with so many others, find ourselves wondering who is next? May that red dress that represent all Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women hang in our tree, until we make those changes that will find those who are lost and wandering.
