In 2015, Brinda Carey started a memoir writing group at a senior center called TASCA. Somewhere along the line, Marsha Graham joined in and started helping with mentoring.
After a while, it became necessary to change locations, so the group moved to the Tyler Public Library.
The library was excited about having a writing group, so they advertised it far and wide and soon other kinds of writers came along.
Lisa Holcomb and Elizabeth McCullough met through NANOWRIMO, stemming from an event the library put on. They hit it off and were looking for some other writers to join up with, so they attended a meeting at the library.
In 2020, Lisa and Elizabeth were invited to join the moderating team at the Tyler Public Library Writer's Club.
In 2021, we changed our name to the Open Door Writing Group.
In 2024, in the theme of "opening doors", we added a night time group so we could help more writers open their minds after their day time work is over. The second group, run by the same great moderation team, met at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Tyler on Thursday nights from 6-8pm.
In 2025, we discontinued the night group, due to a lack of interest (but if anyone wants a night group, we're happy to start another one!). Elizabeth McCullough left the moderation team to explore an exciting opportunity with TJC, but Sara George stepped up to become our queen of grammar. And now we're excited to announce that Milo Villareal joined our team in July 2025!
We are having in-person meetings at the Tyler Public Library in the third floor MakerSpace on Wednesdays from 1pm to 3pm.
