The Open Academy at Claremont McKenna College is hosting an expert panel on "The Information Integrity Challenge: Building Trust in the 2026 U.S. Midterm Election". The panel is centered around the themes of understanding and tackling election misinformation.
The conversation will explore political and digital polarization; how bots and online networks amplify information; how individual biases and group dynamics shape what people believe and share; and how platform algorithms and incentives influence the information ecosystem.
The students will get an opportunity to understanding the nuances of the problem and design innovative solutions.

Neil Chase is the Chief Executive Officer of CalMatters. He was formerly Executive Editor at The Mercury News and the East Bay Times and has worked as a journalist at the San Francisco Examiner, Arizona Republic, CBS MarketWatch and The New York Times.

Associate Professor of Physics, Department of Natural Sciences, Claremont Colleges
Sarah Marzen’s interdisciplinary research spans biophysics, machine learning, neuroscience, dynamical systems, and information theory. Particularly relevant to the Information Integrity Challenge is her work on opinion dynamics where she uses mathematical models to study how cognitive biases affect the way beliefs evolve as information is shared. Her research finds that confirmation bias can produce polarization, while interactions among multiple biases can generate complex and persistent fluctuations in beliefs.
Associate Professor of Marketing, College of Business Administration, Cal Poly Pomona
Dr. Stein received his Ph.D. in Social Psychology from Yale University. He researches how people’s decisions, social beliefs, and economic understanding are shaped by how they determine what is real and what’s not. His current investigations include how political leanings impact how people weigh anecdotal versus scientific evidence, how trust in institutions relates to people’s reasoning ability, and why people value products that are verified to be ineffective or inauthentic Prior to joining the faculty of Cal Poly Pomona, Dr. Stein worked at Material Plus where he executed advanced customer analytics on a wide range of studies for several Fortune 500 companies.

Terril Jones has spent more than 40 years full-time in journalism -- 30+ years as a foreign and business correspondent and editor for Reuters, the Los Angeles Times, Forbes magazine and The Associated Press. His assignments included 18 years in Beijing, Paris and Tokyo covering politics, business, bilateral and regional relations, and all manner of domestic issues.

He is now a board member of Voice of San Diego. Scott serves as L.A. Reported’s editor-in-chief.

Ray S is an investigator specializing in high-harm online threats and information integrity. At LinkedIn, his work includes investigations into global influence operations, automation, scams, and other online harms. Previously, he led investigators on Twitter’s Threat Disruption team, combating information operations, and served as an investigator on two UN Commissions of Inquiry. He also brings more than eight years of international democracy and governance experience, including work on electoral integrity, human rights, and online safety.
