The Open Academy Information Integrity Hackathon 2026 | Total $2400 cash prizes to be won
Ahead of the 2026 U.S. midterm elections, bring your ideas, your discipline, and your team to design an evidence-based solution that helps college students better judge what to trust, what to share, and how to navigate a rapidly changing information environment.
Misinformation doesn’t spread for just one reason.
What people believe and share is shaped by how individuals process information, how people influence one another, and how digital platforms shape what gets seen and amplified.
An individual may be more likely to engage with emotionally compelling content; a peer may reinforce that information within a social network; and a platform's recommendation system may then amplify it to additional users.
The challenge is to identify a specific mechanism within this interconnected system and design an intervention that can realistically change it
We invite CMC students to bring their inter-disciplinary lens, curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving skills to this challenge.
In teams of 2 to 4, you will design an intervention that addresses a specific information-integrity problem affecting college students, develop a prototype or tangible representation of the solution, and consider how it could be tested within the Claremont Colleges and potentially scaled to other campuses.
Solutions can draw on behavioral science, AI and technology, social networks, platform design, communication, governance, policy, platform economics, or combinations of these approaches.
This is an opportunity to build something that can move beyond the hackathon; from an idea, to a prototype, to a real-world campus intervention.
