Our family medicine didactics occur weekly on Wednesday afternoons and include: journal club, board review, practice management, OMM review, and lectures by guests, faculty, residents, and students. We are also part of the Michigan State University Statewide Campus System (SCS) which offers family medicine events once per month ranging from workshops to lectures to certification courses.
All residents are required to participate in scholarly activity, including one quality improvement project and one case study or research project. Scholarly activity is supported and mentored by faculty and our two co-directors of research and clinical trials, Judith Boura, MS and Michael Shaw, PhD. In addition, the program partners with Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine for research resources, training, and independent opportunities.
Inpatient rotations are primarily at the two campuses of Henry Ford Hospital in Warren and Madison Heights. Outpatient rotations are typically at Henry Ford associated practices located throughout the Detroit metropolitan area.
In addition to the below rotations, a further requirement is completion of at least 6 months total inpatient medicine including the mandatory 4 months IM and 1 month ICU. This means doing an additional month of GI, Pulm, Cardio, or another medicine elective with at least part of the rotation being inpatient.
Possible electives include: Allergy and Immunology, Dermatology, Endocrinology, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Nephrology, Neurology, Podiatry, Sleep Medicine.
The schedule must also include rotations in 3 surgical subspecialties (e.g., ENT, Ophthalmology, Urology).

Our program is the first program in Michigan and in the country to offer this track. Residents involved will acquire a useful baseline knowledge in integrative medicine and therpies that can be applied to patient care. This training can also be built upon if fellowship is desired following graduation.
An overview of Henry Ford salary and health benefits is available for review. An educational stipend of $1500 per year is available for residents to use for laptops, textbooks, conferences, question banks, medical equipment, professional membership fees, etc. Residents also receive an annual meal allowance of $2400 which can be used at the Henry Ford cafeterias and coffee shop.
Each year, residents have 25 days of vacation time. A maximum of 10 family medicine clinic days can be taken off.
Each resident is assigned a faculty advisor to engage in regular progress reports and to discuss areas of improvement, such as performance in the clinic, rotation evaluations, and annual in-service exams. Faculty advisors can also assist with concerns such as rotation schedules and vacation requests.
Moonlighting is encouraged for those residents that have successfully completed the PGY-1 year, passed their COMLEX Level 3/USMLE Step 3, have obtained at least a 60th percentile on the AOBFP in-training exam, and have obtained their full medical license. Residents must comply with ACGME regulations for monthly work hours.
