How numbers are presented can shape our behavior. We found that showing a numerical range—such as “0–60” instead of simply “60,” or “20–60 seconds” instead of “at least 20 seconds”—can improve adherence to safety and health guidelines. This simple “Range Nudge” reduced speeding and encouraged longer handwashing without changing the underlying rule.

Water demand often concentrates at particular times of day, placing pressure on water infrastructure. Using smart-meter data from households, we examined whether dynamic water tariffs could shift consumption away from peak hours. The results showed that changing prices across the day encouraged households to move some of their water use from peak to off-peak periods, suggesting a new approach to sustainable water-demand management.
