Final Thought

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw thrives off of the chemistry between its leads and is a successful spin-off from the F&F franchise.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw: Film Review

Directed by David Leitch

Written by Chris Morgan

Starring Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Idris Elba, Vanessa Kirby

Synopsis

Hobbs & Shaw follows its two titular leads Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) as they track down Brixton (Idris Elba), a near-superhuman. They have 48 hours before Shaw's sister, Hattie (Vanessa Kirby), is exposed to a deadly virus that could cause global extinction.

Review

There is great chemistry between the two leads. They play off of each other well (though there might be one too many crotch jokes). The film relies heavily on the chemistry and screen presence of its leads to make up for the thin plot. Idris Elba is a formidable opponent (even though I don’t like as an actor him all that much). Vanessa Kirby is a good match for the two leads (and she can hold her own). The cameos are enjoyable (one is more of a supporting role, but the other is definitely a cameo). There are great action sequences, as per usual with the F&F movies. The action is less car-centric, thus less unbelievable (it's still very unbelievable, just less than the others in the franchise). The plot is thin, to make more room for the action sequences. This film is definitely lighter in terms of tone than the other F&F films. It is more fun to watch. The film is funny. It's possibly the funniest film in the F&F universe. This film makes a good case for future spinoffs for these characters. I don’t know if Fast & Furious Presents: Roman and Tej would hold up as well.

Rated PG-13 for prolonged sequences of action and violence, suggestive material and some strong language
