Now, let's find out how seminar happens in the online classroom.

NOTE: You may hear these referred to as "Live Streaming", "DVC" which means "Desktop Video Conferencing" or by our video conferencing tools "Zoom" or "Teams". All are applicable.

Seminars in your online class will typically take place using a video conferencing tool, much like the tool I'm using right now. Classes with a video seminar component are typically referred to as "DVC" or "Desktop Video Conferencing" classes.

NOTE: You may also hear the term "Live Streaming" which is also applicable.

For an online class, your instructor may have scheduled seminar (at a specific day and time) that you will need to attend. These are live, synchronous (meaning everyone logs in at the same time) and provides you with an opportunity to interact in real time with both your professor and your fellow students.

Some classes may record these seminars so that you can go back and refer to them again, which is a great way to review information, especially before a test or assignments. In fact, you may have professors who record mini-sessions, short snippets of informative lecture, to make it easier for you to download, access and review.

The tool we typically use is called Zoom and your instructor will provide you with a link to enter the room. Much like a f2f classroom, you will be expected to adhere to professional classroom behavior while in a live seminar session -- check with your instructor for more details about seminar expectations.

So, let's peek into a video seminar. In fact, you already have a pretty good idea of what this looks like, especially for recorded sessions. Let's say we were in a live session, though. As students entered the room, I would welcome each of you and the chat box would be open on the right, so you and your classmates could interact. I typically teach English and College Success classes, so let's say we had an assignment to discuss. One of the great features of a video seminar session is that I can share items on my computer desktop with my students through a feature called "screen sharing".

There are other terrific features in the video conferencing tool, but the main thing to remember is that your professor will share information about how and when you will attend seminar.

We've also put together some helpful information that goes deeper into video seminar tools. Check it out in this module!
