With the earnest desire to educate and be educated, Maragusan National High School was born and established on August 13, 1968 as Maragusan Barrio High School for Maragusan was then a barrio of Mabini.
Important personalities during this period were the parents, the barrio officials headed by barrio captain Serapio Charcos, the school officials of Mabini headed by district supervisor of Mabini, Mr. Moises L. Barcena and the municipal mayor, Romulo Ramirez with municipal councilor, Manolo T. Yanong. The first teachers were Mr. Claro M. Mabasa and Mr. Bienvenido S. Sombreo, Jr., who became the teacher in-charge, head teacher and principal until 1995, the first administrator on part time basis was Mr. Ethelwoldo Gaviola, the principal of Maragusan Elementary School.
There were 78 students in first year and 13 students in second year. From that time on, the school went into a series of names changing from Barrio High School to Community High School to Barangay High School to Municipal High School then finally to National High School. In the early years of its operation, the school shared its campus with Maragusan Elementary School... its buildings, were PTA donated, had bamboo slats for walls and dirt for floors. The financial operation was shouldered by the PTA, the instructional materials were privately owned or financed by the teachers, reading materials were donated by private individuals and chairs were owned by students.
In September 1977, the school was relocated to its present site which originally contained 12 hectares. To accomodate the cultural community, a portion of it was slashed out to form part of the Mansaka village leaving only four hectares to the school. In this same year, Maragusan became a municipality called San Mariano, the school was then under a municipal government. Fund sources for teachers' salaries were taken from the tuition fees of students.
In 1987, the school was included in the National budget and in 1988, teachers' salaries were standardized.Some local government officials had alloted portion of their countryside development fund (CDF) for the development of Maragusan National High School.
In 1992, the provincial government of Davao del Norte through governor Prospero Amatong, T.H.E building was constructed.
On June 12, 2000, president Joseph Ejercito Estrada, signed presidential proclamation no. 324 which entitled Maragusan National High School, the legal right to occupy the present school site.
In Nov. 1997, congressman Roger M. Sarmiento, donated 5 units of Macintosh Computer with 1 camera and 1 printer. In Feb. 2000, the provincial government of Compostela Valley, through the initiative of Gov. Jose R. Caballero, the MNHS Faculty plus the PTCA donation the Maragusan NHS mini-gymnasium was realized.
Vice gov. Rey Navarro and board member Manolo T. Yanong, donated the building for school clinic and computer room in 2001.
In 2002, the school was a recipient of 20 computer units from the Department of Trade and Industry headed by Secretary Mar Roxas.
In April 2005, the school was visited by rio less than the regional director himself, director Diamar P. Kadon who had apportioned five steel cabinets to the school.
On July 24, 2005, Filipino and Foreign (Japanese and Koreans) came to MNHS and interacted with students in games and arts. The volunteers also did mural paintings in the walls of the concrete school fence, planted with vegetables in the school gardens and donated 5 soccer balls to the school.
In the same year, the school library was expanded into a 2-room facility. Donors of library books included among others; the municipal mayor, Hon. Arsenio L. Yanong, Jr., vice-gov. Ramil Gentugaya, Board member Cesar C. Colina, SB Members: Simeon Salamilao, (at the same time the PTCA President), Dario Tormis, Nilo Salva, SK chair - Joven Salva, and Ms. Bernadette S. Sombreo of Maryland, USA.
The two previous local municipal administrators of Manolo T. Yanong and Jerome Lamparas, Sr. The PTCA and its present president, Mr. Simeon Salamilao, Sr. The local school board and the present administration of Mayor Arsenio L. Yanong, Jr. have always been supportive of Maragusan National High School through its financial and moral assistance.
With the integrated fundings and donations and linkages with different sectors established, the school was able to send teachers and even students for trainings, seminars or workshops and conferences to places as far as Luzon and Visayas. Construction of concrete school buildings and science laboratory were underway; purchases of instructional equipments and supplies were made possible for more science laboratory equipment, textbooks, sets of encyclopedia, computer units, chairs and other furniture and fixtures were acquired by the school.
In other developments, Maragusan National High School became a mother school to four daughter schools, three of which are already independent schools, namely: Tupaz National High School, Mapawa National High School, and Paloc National High School, the recently opened New Albay Barangay High School and Langgawisan Barangay High School which are not yet nationalized.
In all these years of existence, Maragusan National has only 4 administrators, Mr. Bienvenido S. Sombreo, Jr. from 1968-1995, Mrs. Fortunata B. Dango, OIC from 1995-2000, Mr. Virgilito C. Pabrices, Principal | from 2000-2004 and Mrs. Macaria C. Fajardo, Principal II (detailed from Compostela National High School) from 2004-2009 and Roger H. Prades, MA.Ed, principal II from July 21, 2009 to present. Among its pioneer faculty members who are still an active educators are Ms. Zosima S. Retardo, Mrs. Elvira A. Malubay, Mrs. Evangeline J. Acerbo, Mrs. Rufina B. Llanos, Mrs. Maria S. Nabas, Mrs. Lioba C. Lindong and Ms. Elba S. Gaylon.
Maragusan National High School being an institution of learning has contributed to the community graduates who became professionals, community leaders, public servants and law-abiding citizens. Among its alumni to join the present teaching force and staff of their alma mater are the following: Emmanuel L. Abyan, Merriam Jumalon-Antonio, Annie Saromines-Cabalquinto, Eladia Sumampong-Docena, Cesar B. Escuadro, Elba S. Gaylon, Marilou Jumalon-Lamparas, Jaime L, Saludo, Glenn Paolo G. Sombreo, Mrs. Nenita Blaya-Biag, disbursing officer, administrative ADA-1 Romeo S. Lada. Computer attendant Mr. Renato Pelite and Jenome B. Balico, school watchman.
Year 2009, Congressman Manuel "Way Kurat" Zamora, donated a 2-storey bulding comprising 6- standard classrooms and with that same year, Gov. Arturo T. Uy also donated a Speech Laboratory with 41 seating capacity and with 1 Million worth of speech facilities from government funds and much so in November 7, 2010 were 8 classrooms of 2-storey bulding were constructed followed by a 1M worth of comfort rooms in Sept. 20, 2011. This is all thru the courtesy of the local government unit of the province of Compostela Valley.
As of July 31, 2012, the plantilla of Maragusan National High School consist of one principal II, 1 Head Teacher III, 6 Master Teachers I, 3 Teacher III, 15 Teacher II, 44 Teacher I, 1 school nurse, 1 disbursing officer and a bookkeepper. Non plantilla personnel includes 1 PTCA paid computer attendant and 2 office clerk, 1 utility worker and 4 watchmen, summing to 70 in all. Its students' population is 1,570 in 2009-2010; 1,574 in 2010-2011; 1,633 in 2011-2012 and 1,748 in 2012-2013; 2014-2015; 3,610 in 2023-2024; 3,741 in 2024-2025.
Maragusan National High School of today has come a very long, long way from the day it was founded. It is now adapting modern technology in fact, it has already a functioning electronic "internet" library were students can do access to internet reseach and surfing.
