TOPIC 4: FIRST AID
Administering first aid to an individual with an open wound requires careful action to minimize the risk of infection and promote healing. Here are the essential steps to follow:
Protect Yourself: Wear gloves or use a barrier to prevent exposure to blood or bodily fluids.
Control Bleeding: Apply gentle, direct pressure to the wound using a clean, sterile dressing.
Clean the Wound: Rinse the wound with clean water to remove debris, if available.
Apply a germ-killing Agent: Use an antiseptic solution like povidone-iodine or an antibiotic ointment to reduce the risk of infection.
Use a Drying Agent: If needed, lightly dab the area with sterile gauze to remove excess moisture, or use a drying antiseptic like Betadine.
Apply a dressing: Cover the wound with a sterile bandage or gauze to protect it from contamination.
Seek Medical Attention: For severe wounds, uncontrolled bleeding, or signs of infection, seek a healthcare professional immediately.
