Corrice (French: Carisse) and other French ancestors came to North America and settled along the St. Lawrence river (specifically Montreal, QC & later Ogdensburg, NY). Here they met & made an alliance with the Mohawk (Haudenosaunee/Iroquois Confederacy) & at least one French ancestor took an Mohawk spouse (my 23andme ancestry timeline estimates that a 100% Native American grandparent was born between 1710-1800). It's long been a story shared in my family that some of my earlier ancestors were Mohawk, but I was genuinely surprised when DNA testing confirmed this.
For ancestry purposes, my maternal grandfather's last name is Corrice. However, after his mother and father divorced, he was adopted at the age of 2 years old by my great-grandmother's 2nd husband Gustave "Gus" Bergau. From what I have heard, Gus was a wonderful father and grandfather, and though I share no bloodlines with this man, I am proud to have him be a part of my family tree as it is not just any man that would step into the role of father in an young boy's life. Thank you, great-grandpa Gus.
