Ros Lajoie’s oil paintings explore her personal story. She was born in Mauritius and has developed a body of work that depicts her complex racial lineage, exploring her African, European and Indian heritage. Her work pays homage to her ancestors, in particular those who lived as colonial slaves. It is through this lens that her paintings also unpack scenes of her present home of Sydney, a city which contains natural beauty, her life, friends and family, but which also hold particular significance as a colonialist culture.

Ros enjoys working in oils, as unlike other mediums, it allows her the flexibility she needs to achieve her final results. She manipulates the paint on the canvas with her own modeling, layering and glazing style.
