Owen Ratner

Owen Ratner

I was a lawyer for over 46 years retiring at the end of 2017.

I studied, part time over many years at various art schools including Julian Ashton Art School and National Art School.

I have had a number of exhibitions and been a finalist in many art prizes including Mosman and Hunters Hill.

I paint landscapes, still lives and figurative works and am inspired by the observation of people and places.

I practice my figure work at sketch clubs and paint primarily in oils using traditional methods.

I take photos of urban scenery when I travel and at events, sometimes randomly, but usually because I see a glimpse of something that might be interesting. I then look more closely for subjects in the photos that connect with me. I extract what I want by either drawing the subject and transferring it to the canvas or drawing directly onto the canvas. I quite often compose paintings from multiple photos.
