Born in Horsham, Victoria in 1960, John McRae is a Sydney-based photographer with a strong international reputation, working primarily on exhibition projects, commercial photography and portraiture. He is a member of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP).

John’s exhibition work concentrates on concepts of exposure and intimacy as he explores the relationship between photographer and subject. Although he lives and works in Sydney, his work is shot in various parts of the world including Israel and Lebanon. John explores a continuing body of work that deals with an attempt to better understand the complexities of the region. One approach McRae uses as a working method, clearly demonstrated in several series, is where he creates a scenario and then documents the results. How each model expresses his or her emotions is a direct consequence of the environment in which he finds himself. His response is a series of emotions which, in McRae’s photographs, creates a heightened sense of reality.
