Joan Rabinowitz was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1951 where she gained her DipFA majoring in painting, at the Pretoria College of Art. After emigrating to Australia in 1985, Joan changed course, to a diploma in Sculpture at the Meadowbank College of Tafe.

After a decade devoted to sculpture, Joan returned to painting in 2000. Her paintings are ethereal, richly layered and textured suggesting an archaeological personal journey. The paintings are complex. They evolve over a long period of time. There is strong evidence of her European and African roots in the imagery that combine with figure and gesture, creating a unique visual language.
