The emotional pull of landscape is very strong. When I first saw the ‘green’ of the English countryside, I yearned for the ‘dirty’ green of the Australian bush.

My current work, Riverland, explores how memory distorts and distils reality. The paintings are inspired by the Cox’s River in the Megalong Valley, NSW, site of my country studio. My work references the river and land tending towards abstraction: contrasts of light and dark, variations in colour and tone, meandering lines and enigmatic shadows. As philosopher de Certeou says, ‘… (the land) is haunted by countless ghosts that lurk there in silence.’
