William Griffin

I am again working with woodcut printing, following a 35-year break after my migration from Norway to Australia. As in Norway, I use marine-grade plywood for carving the plates (from one to 7 in individual works) and the printing is done by hand, in quite small series. At the moment I am still relearning some old techniques and thought processes, and hope to develop further, both technically and artistically.

My professional work as a geologist has taken me through many and varied landscapes and cultures, and the imagery in my woodcuts is drawn mainly from these encounters and from the nature around me now. Some of my memories are sharp and others blurred by time. There thus is no attempt at photorealism, and the woodcut medium encourages a degree of simplification and abstraction that can condense the essence of the experience. My primary goal with this work is to pass on distilled impressions of my experiences and reactions to my family, but I hope that others will find them interesting or attractive.
