In my practice, the development of a painting language is ongoing and is the essence of my work. It demands changes in subject, innovation in materials and constant exploration of the mark making process. It is constant in the pursuit of an image, which lurks in the back of my mind but has not yet been realised.
I inch towards this ideal, backwards sometimes forwards, my progress isn’t necessarily linear, but I can occasionally see glimpses, a moment in a work not necessarily my most recent, which nudges me forward, a little closer. I have, after all, at least 45 years’ worth of paintings and drawings to edit and review, to orchestrate and resolve. From student pictures made at The Slade to works created in my Sydney studio last week.
I want to make a painting which moves the individual, which offers a way of seeing that is beyond the everyday, that is the everyday, a shed, a tree, a beach, a sky, a figure, an adventure for the eye, maybe even something for the soul.
