Avila Gray
I am an Australian illustrator who specialises in fine ink pen and watercolour paintings. My illustrations depict snapshots and stories of a future utopian animal kingdom set on Earth, known as Erlenmeyer. I use a warm, muted colour palette and create highly detailed scenes centred around animal characters and their interactions within their eco-urban environment.
Since a very young age I have always loved reading and exploring imaginary worlds. Due to being particularly intrigued by societal structures and politics, I am in the process of writing an illustrated encyclopaedia which informs the reader on how the world looks and works in 700'000 years' time, when 12 species of animals run 12 cities across the earth. The book is being written from the perspective of an immortal raccoon, McAllister, who witnesses the departure of humans and the establishment of the animal cities.
However, as this book is taking a long time to create, I sell extracts of it as art prints, greeting cards, stickers, playing cards, notebooks and more, all of which you can find (along with me!) at the Rocks Markets every weekend in Sydney. The book (and the rest of my work) is a commentary on how our current societal operations and customs do not generally serve us as individuals or as a community. My pieces are intended to highlight the contrast between the capitalist, consumption-fuelled environmental exploitation that is being experienced on Earth and a more sustainable example.
