Ece Altunc
Ece Altunc is a Turkish-Australian multidisciplinary artist and art therapist based at Balmain Studios. With a foundational background in sculpture from Mimar Sinan Fine Art University and extensive professional experience in film art direction and production design, her practice is deeply informed by the construction of space and narrative. She holds a Master of Fine Arts from Sydney College of the Arts, where her research focused on the psychological impact of environments and the immersive potential of installation.
Her current practice utilizes the stark clarity of ink and high-contrast monochromatic compositions to navigate the intricate layers of the human psyche. Drawing on her clinical background in therapy, Altunc interprets the mind as a structural landscape—an internal city where architectural geometries and human forms intersect. By removing the distraction of color, she creates an analytical space where the complex frameworks of thought are distilled into clear, essential forms.
Altunc’s work investigates the tension between structural confinement and the resilience of the spirit. Her drawings serve as blueprints of the subconscious, where sharp urban perspectives and overlapping planes act as metaphors for the internal boundaries we inhabit. Through the juxtaposition of rigid building forms and the organic silhouettes of women, she explores the precise threshold where constructed enclosures give way to a sense of psychological release and liberation.
