Alvin Williams

Alvin Williams

Alvin is a Sydney based contemporary artist his recent works of absurd illogical paintings and digital drawings draw inspiration from 20th century Hollywood and Australian cinema, wrestling and the ‘golden age of porn’.

His current works explores masculinity and looks at how contemporary western visual media is made for a white male audience. The sources he has explored include stereotypical characters from different worlds, for example a heroic cowboy and a vile vixen which he collages together into a new and interesting composition creating a new narrative.

Alvin paints in a naive painterly style, flat surfaces with big bright colours. He chooses to focus on the qualities of painting as a medium itself rather than trying to create an illusionistic representation of the real world. His Paintings are large scale, colourful, expressionist and humorous, he hopes to captivate the viewer’s imagination and evoke a nostalgic connection.

Alvin Williams completed a BFA at the National Art School in Sydney in 2017. He was a finalist in the 2017 Shirl National Youth Portrait Prize and received the NAS Graduate award Derivan multi-media prize.
