Pvt. Allen B. Every (42144941)
Company G, 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division (The Golden Arrow)
Allen Barlow Every was born December 29, 1918 in Oneonta, NY to Cornelius William Every (1896-1960) and Marion Jane Barlow (1898-1972). His parents were married on February 1, 1916 in Otsego County, NY. Cornelius was from nearby Bloomville, NY. Marion was from Oneonta, NY. His dad was an auto mechanic and eventually owned his own business. He had a younger brother Bruce and his family lived on East End Road and later Chestnut Street in Oneonta, NY. He attended Oneonta schools and left Oneonta High School in 1939. The 1940 US Census records Allen was 21 and a truck driver before he entered the service.
He married Genevieve M. Hall (1916-2020) on May 12, 1940 in Oxford, NY. The Census of that year recorded her living with the Every family. After his death, she moved back in with her parents on Church St., in Oneonta, NY. She eventually remarried to Albert Alger.
Allen registered for the draft in October 1940 and was drafted into the Army on June 15, 1944 at Fort Dix, New Jersey.. He was 6' 1 and 1/2” tall and weighed 150 pounds. He had blue eyes and brown hair. After basic training at Camp Croft, South Carolina, he was sent overseas on November 15, 1944 to join the 28th Infantry Regiment, 8th Infantry Division which had been fighting in France since it came ashore at Normandy on D-Day. Known as “The Golden Arrow”, the heroics of the 28 Infantry Regiment is well documented. By the time Pvt. Every joined them, in November 1944, the 8th Infantry Division was near the Germany boarder and took part in the heavy fighting in the Hürtgen Forest. The Battle of Hürtgen Forest was a series of battles fought from September 13, 1944 to February 10,1945, It was the longest battle on German ground during World War II and is the longest single battle the U.S. Army has ever fought. It included the infamous Battle of the Bulge (otherwise known as the Ardennes Offiensive) which started on December 16, 1944.
How Pvt. Allen Every was killed is not known for sure (probably a mine, see note below) but on December 27, 1944 he was reported missing near Vossenach, Germany. A year a day later he was offical declared killed in action. Later, on February 19, 1948, after a remarkable effort, his body was found near Vossenach, identified to be him and buried in the United States Military Cemetery Neuville-en-Condroz, Belgium, Plot DD, Row 10, Grave Number 244. The team finding his remains reported that a "stake-mine", partly denonated was found near his remains and likely was the cause of his death. A bazoka and rifle were also found near his remains. The team estimated that given the location of his remains he was likely killed in the November-December 1944 time frame. A map this team drew is included in the Supporting Documents section.
Later, at the request of his family, Pvt. Every is buried in Block A, Row 43, Grave 3 in the Neuville-En-Condroz Permanent Cemetery, Belgium. Pvt. Every was awarded the Purple Heart posthumosly.
A sliver dollar was found with his remains and returned to his wife Genevieve in August of 1948. If you notice anything erroneous in this profile or have additional information to contribute to it, please contact Jim Greenberg at nez13820@gmail.com.
