Pre-service Teachers

A Partnership with the Catskill Regional Teacher Center about the importance of play

Understanding play is crucial for pre-service teachers because it supports children's cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development. Play enhances learning by promoting problem-solving, language acquisition, creativity, and critical thinking, while also fostering social skills like cooperation and empathy. It encourages intrinsic motivation, reduces stress, and provides opportunities for differentiated instruction that meets the diverse needs of learners. Play is central to developmentally appropriate practices, allowing teachers to create engaging, child-centered environments that support holistic growth. Furthermore, teachers can use play to observe and assess children's progress in an authentic way, building strong relationships and designing meaningful curricula. By recognizing the importance of play, pre-service teachers are better equipped to nurture the whole child, foster a positive classroom climate, and enhance overall learning experiences.
