PROJECT ROADMAP
Here in the northern hemisphere, we experience several months of deep darkness each year. Bright light has been developed as a way to alleviate the effects of this seasonal lack of sunlight.
The final outcome of this Hackathon will be a Bright Light Therapy Lamp.
Bright light therapy is used to support people with Seasonal Affective Disorder, enhance alertness during the winter months, regulate the circadian rhythm, reduce the symptoms of jet lag, and improve overall mood and concentration. Typically, bright light therapy involves daily exposure to intense light for 15–60 minutes, often in the morning.
YOUR MISSION
Each team will design and produce one fully functional bright light therapy lamp. The lamp can be any size, but it must be an adjustable table lamp. You may use up to four materials: wood, plywood, felt, and plastic. Otherwise, there are no restrictions on shape, form, or style. You will have access to digital fabrication tools including a CNC machine, 3D printer, and laser cutter.
DELIVERABLES
1:1 scale lamp prototype. A name and logo for the lamp. Two A2-sized illustrations, shown at the final exhibition. A design suitable for scalable production – if you can make 1, you should be able to make 100. Production process that relies primarily on digital methods.
REFLECTION: THE FUTURE OF MAKING
What is the future of making within Arts & Crafts and Design? Can we create beautiful, meaningful, and desirable products using emerging digital methods? What are the advantages and disadvantages of these production techniques?
TEAMS
There will be 5 multidisciplinary teams consisting of graphic designers, product designers, and furniture makers. There are no team leaders – every member is equal.
