The WFBL was formed in June of 1998 with 10 original franchises by the original Commissioner, Matt Veasey. The following season the WFBL expanded to 12 teams in 1999. The WFBL then expanded to 16 teams in February 2003. On August 20th, 2010 the WFBL announced its final expansion plans to 18 total teams that will compete in 3 seperate divisions (Paul Owens EAST, Harray Kalas CENTRAL, Connie Mack WEST).
The Omaha Mavericks first joined the WFBL on February 1st, 2002 and ran through the 2004 season before changing ownership in 2005 and subsequently moved to Spokane, Washington. On September 25th, 2009 the Omaha Mavericks returned to the WFBL, taking over the Louisiana Longballers franchise and consequently moving them from Rayne, Louisiana to Omaha, Nebraska and changing the franchise name to the Omaha Royals.
As the Louisiana Longballers the team compiled a franchise regular season record of 104-134-13 and a playoff record of 3-3, winning the Connie Mack/West Division Pennant, 3 times in 1999, 2006 & 2007 as well as winning the WFBL Championship in 2007.
In 2011 the Omaha Mavericks moved from the Connie Mack/West Division to the newly created Harry Kalas/Central Division to accommodate for the WFBL's final expansion and was re-named the Omaha Royals. As part of the 2012 realignment, the Omaha Royals and the Joplin Twisters (formerly Jackson Hole Blowfish) swapped places and the Royals once again returned to the Connie Mack/West Division while the Joplin Twisters joined the Harry Kalas/Central Division.
Following the conclusion of the 2022 season, the franchise announced the move to nearby Werner Park in Papillion, Nebraska and rebranded the franchise as the Omaha Storm Chasers. The Storm Chasers will continue to play in the Connie Mack/West Division.
