A Little Bit About Me

To me, doing mathematics effectively is about thinking differently more than it is about thinking very hard. Of course, mathematical discovery often requires a significant amount of legwork, but nonetheless the most creative and profound insights usually come from fresh perspectives. In that regard, I have always enjoyed surrounding myself with people from a variety of different backgrounds, upbringings, and cultures, many of whom do not see the world (or math) exactly as I do.

At the same time, I also consider it worthwhile to maintain a variety of interests. Among other things, I enjoy occupying my time with rock music, history, exercise, American football, recent scientific developments, stage musicals, J.R.R. Tolkien, long walks in nature and in the city, bowling, good food, and good conversation.

I also enjoy traveling when I can. I'm not a particularly avid or creative photographer, but here are some of my favorite photos that I've taken over the years, in no particular order.
