Library - Learning Resource Centre "Stelios Ioannou"

The Learning Resource Centre "Stelios Ioannou" is the result of special design and careful planning and in depth study of the University of Cyprus academic needs and physical environment. This project has become possible due to a major donation of €8.000.000 from Mrs. Elli St. Ioannou, in memory of her late husband Stelios Ioannou. Following the benefactor's request the design of the project was assigned to the renowned French architect Jean Nouvel.

Due to its particular architectural character the project is a landmark which will transcend Cyprus' boundaries and places Cyprus on the world map of architecture. The building is located to the northeast of the University campus as an artificial hill similar in shape to the adjacent hills of the area and especially resembling the Aronas hill which dominates the south part of the area with its characteristic plateau.

The Library roof is covered by a translucent cupola on top of which appears a 5m heliostat with a vertical rotation axis of integrated rotating blinds that direct natural light even to the lowest building level. Natural light is diffused to all reading rooms in the lower levels through a system that reflects light on the surface of a 24m cone located at the centre of the central patio. A coloured membrane covers all sides of the artificial hill’s slopes and an impressive white cupola juts out of the plateau crowning it.

The building houses 1 million printed volumes, over 30,000 electronic journal titles and 150 databases. It also provides approximately 900 study seats that are equipped with modern technology. The Learning Resource Centre "Stelios Ioannou" is aspired to become the roof and central core of knowledge - with advanced aesthetics at the heart of the campus, employing latest technology in order to support and serve the future 10,000 students, the entire research and academic community of Cyprus and society in general.
