THE STORY OF OLD SCHOOL GANJA
Old School Ganja (OSG) was founded through a collaboration between Gordon Hamilton and Serge Manna, a partnership that began shortly after the Arizona Medical Marijuana Act was approved in 2010. In 2015, the pair transitioned from state-approved caregiver grows to establish Elephant Head Farm (EHF), a state-certified dispensary cultivation site on 10 acres of desert south of Tucson.
With over 80 years of combined cannabis cultivation experience, Gordon and Serge embraced an open-source approach to genetics, sharing their best strains with anyone interested in propagating cannabis. This philosophy fostered valuable alliances, and by the time EHF was sold in 2019, the farm maintained 151 strains in a perpetual grow system, producing 8,000 pounds of organically-based cannabis annually across open fields, hoop houses, and greenhouses.
EHF’s extensive strain collection served two important purposes. First, Gordon and Serge believed that different strains vary in their efficacy for treating specific ailments in different individuals. Second, they recognized that every cultivation environment is unique, and matching strains to the right growing conditions could significantly enhance production. At EHF, they were able to boost yields simply by aligning specific strains with the appropriate seasons.
The shift from sourcing strains through collaborations to becoming breeders arose when many of their top strains began “Dudding out.” This decline in vigor and potency was caused by epigenetics and senescence, common challenges in multi-generational mother/clone processes.
Today, OSG Seeds is dedicated to continuously improving its genetic inventory. Through collaborations with other growers and breeders, as well as ongoing multi-generational phenotype hunting, OSG ensures its strains remain fresh and vital. Staying true to their open-source ethos, they make their best strains available to those who can put them to good use.
