Are you on the verge of retiring – or considering it in the near future?
Some people approach it with trepidation.
This needn’t be the case.
You can still keep contact with old colleagues, make new friends and stay with the profession you’ve devoted so many year to by becoming a retired member of the NEU.
We have a social group called ARM (Active Retired Members) that organises walks, lunches, trips out and has its own termly newsletter. We’re a friendly crowd and always happy to see new colleagues.
Here are some details and advice if you’d like to join us.
This year retired membership costs £22.20.
If you wish to continue by doing some supply or part-time work you will need to take out the appropriate membership, as the retired members fee doesn’t cover insurance in the work place.
It’s also worth pointing out that the Union cannot support ex-members who have historical allegations, either for or against them, if they are no longer members of the union. So possibly a good reason for continuing to be a member after retirement.
If your membership lapses you cannot rejoin the union as a retired member.
Most retired members wish to remain as members with the branch in the region they worked. This is not automatic. Your membership will be moved to the area you live in. If you worked in Oldham but live in Kirklees your membership will be moved to Kirklees NEU. You won’t receive our newsletter or information from ARM.
The solution is to contact head office and tell them to transfer your membership details back to Oldham NEU. Several members have already done this.
You will continue to be able to attend general meetings and will be very welcome to help Oldham NEU either at our office in the Civic Centre, with leafleting, promoting the union at various events or supporting us with campaigns as they arise.
Retirement needn’t mean cutting yourself off from the world of education but can open up new directions for you.
We’d love you to stay with us.
