Hello, Sandburg parents and guardians!
I want to warmly welcome you to the new school year! My name is Cassandra Mercuri, and I am the Student Assistance Coordinator (SAC) here at Sandburg Middle School. Many students benefit from the Student Assistance Program during their middle school years, and I’m here to provide support as they navigate this important time in their lives.
My role is to help students who may be experiencing personal, family, or social challenges that can affect their well-being and academic focus. Some of the common concerns I often assist with include family transitions (like separation, divorce, or remarriage), grief and loss, struggles with anxiety or depression, peer conflicts, and issues related to alcohol or other drugs. Together, we work on building self-esteem, developing coping strategies, improving decision-making skills, and helping students express their emotions in healthy ways.
Sometimes, students ask to meet with me on their own, and other times, I’m contacted by a parent, staff member, or concerned friend. Meetings can be one-on-one or in small support groups, depending on the student’s needs. I always strive to schedule appointments in a way that minimally disrupts their academic day.
I want you to know that I’m also here for you—the parents and guardians. Middle school can bring unique challenges for your child, and I’m happy to offer support or provide resources in the community if you ever feel it would be helpful. I deeply respect the important role you play in your child’s life, and I’m here to be a partner in their journey.
Confidentiality is something I take very seriously. Everything discussed in the Student Assistance Program is kept confidential unless there is a safety concern. If your child is working with a private clinician, I’m more than happy to collaborate with them—just let me know, and I can provide a form to authorize communication.
Additionally, please note that any reports of harassment, intimidation, or bullying must be investigated and are not confidential. In my dual role as the Anti-Bullying Specialist, I am committed to ensuring a safe and supportive environment for all students.
I look forward to getting to know you and your children this year. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if there’s anything I can do to support your family.
