OKLAHOMA ALPHA DELTA KAPPA HISTORY
The Heritage of our Nation for Alpha Delta Kappa are both National and International. Oklahoma's chapter began in April of 1951, when Agnes Robertson (Shipman) came to Eastern Oklahoma where she had a friend and organized Oklahoma's first chapter, Gamma. Gamma members were from a number of little towns, and was a County Chapter. Some of its members attended our early State meetings. Some of them moved away, some passed away and some lost interest. They did not take in new members, so their chapter lapsed.
In May of 1951, Agnes also organized Delta Chapter. It too, was a County Chapter, with members from a number of small towns. Unlike Gamma, when Delta lost members, they took in new members. They met for lunch on Saturday, because some of them drove twenty or twenty-five miles to attend the meetings. We have had several state officers and committee chairmen from Delta, and two of our State Presidents were from that Chapter. Jewel Costner of Poteau was the first appointed State President, and Cuba Belle Campbell of Sallisaw was one of our elected ones.
Those were the only two chapters in Oklahoma until November of 1952 when
Agnes came to Oklahoma City, and interviewed prospects until she had enough to form a chapter. Seventeen members were initiated November 22, 1952 by a team from Kansas.
Alpha was the third chapter instead of the first because Alpha was always saved tor the Capital City and Beta for the second larges city. Epsilon in Shawnee was organized in December of 1953. The initiating team was made up of the Alpha members. Not long after, in January of 1954 Beta was organized in Tulsa. Again, the initiating team was from the Alpha Chapter.
