My coursework in Public Health has developed my ability to plan, implement, and evaluate effective health programs using evidence-based approaches grounded in theory and community needs. In PUBH 390: Program Planning and Implementation, I conducted a comprehensive needs assessment for adult women in rural Bama, Nigeria, identifying high rates of infectious diseases linked to poor hygiene practices. Based on this analysis, I designed The Empower Hygiene Initiative (EHI), an evidence-based program combining hygiene education workshops and hygiene kit distribution. This program used data-driven methods, stakeholder engagement, and behavior change models to promote sustainable health improvements. By employing best practices such as community participation, formative research, and logic model planning, I demonstrated my ability to translate assessment findings into actionable public health interventions.
In PUBH 420: Health Behavior Theories, I applied theoretical models to guide health behavior change, including the Transtheoretical Model (TTM), Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), and the Health Belief Model (HBM). For example, SCT’s focus on self-efficacy and observational learning informed my strategies for empowering participants in the EHI program to adopt and sustain positive hygiene behaviors. The HBM’s constructs of perceived barriers and benefits guided the creation of culturally sensitive communication materials addressing misconceptions about disease prevention. These applications illustrate my skill in using theory to structure and justify program components that foster meaningful and lasting behavior change.
Finally, in PUBH 480: Global Health, I explored emergency response and recovery planning during civil unrest in Northern Nigeria. Through this assignment, I analyzed global health systems, collaborated approaches with organizations such as WHO and UNICEF, and designed mitigation and preparedness strategies to prevent disease outbreaks among displaced populations. Integrating lessons from this experience, I reinforced the importance of evidence-based interventions, cross-sector collaboration, and capacity building in global health program planning. Collectively, these experiences demonstrate my ability to assess community needs, apply behavioral theory, and implement data-driven, sustainable, and culturally appropriate health programs—skills essential for success in public health program management and leadership.
