Plasmid Design 101 Workshop

Join the Okanagan iGEM Competitive Team in computational activities, building plasmids and simulating restriction digests at our upcoming Workshop! 🧬

Bioart Lab Workshop

Have you ever wanted to paint with microbes? 🦠

Join the Okanagan iGEM Club hands-on in decorating agar plates with fluorescent bacteria at our upcoming Lab Workshop! 🧬

You will get the chance to come into the Lab, create your own bioart masterpiece and learn about the basics of microbiology, genetic engineering as well as the history of fluorescent proteins! 🎨

The Bioart Lab Workshop will take place on Friday, November 17th from 12:00 - 1:30 PM in SCI 326.

Prior lab experience is not required for this Workshop. Open to all students, regardless of year or major! Just bring your own clean labcoat! 🥼

ImmuniBee Open House

Come learn about Okanagan iGEM's 2023 synthetic biology research project, ImmuniBee!

This year's research project, ImmuniBee, plans to be the first vaccine for honey bees against the deadly disease, deformed wing virus (DWV).

The Open House will feature Team Members from our various subgroups such as Wet Lab, Dry Lab, Human Practices, Wiki and Finance! All together, these subgroups work collectively to develop a comprehensive, well-rounded research project.

At the event, we will be presenting in detail our project and answer any of your questions! Come learn how you can get involved in student-directed research projects like this one!

Biotech-Inspired Movie Night

Join the UBCO iGEM Competitive Team for a biotech-inspired Movie Night on Friday, April 14th at 6:30 PM in ART 103!

Kick-Off Meeting

UBCO iGEM invites you to attend our kick-off meeting for the 2022-23 term!

Interested in learning more about the upcoming events, workshops, and volunteering opportunities we have to offer?

Come by LIB 312 on Nov. 18th at 4:30PM to meet your Executives, ask questions and connect with other members in Icebreaker activities!

We will also be providing a recap on our past projects, including Life Bulb from our Competition Research Team!

iSTAND STEM Summer Camps

We hosted two youth workshops for children ages 5-10 years old,  in collaboration with iSTAND! UBCO iGEM taught the children about the basics of synthetic biology, learning about bacteria and DNA! The students also got to experiment with yeast and we performed demonstrations using dry ice and paper filter chromatography! The children had a lot of fun, and didn't want it to end!

UBCO iGEM x Let's Talk Science!

In collaboration with Let's Talk Science and iSTAND, we met with over 40 Indigenous grade 7 students from across the Okanagan! The children got to build their own GMO, view various organisms under the microscope and learn more about the possibilities of synthetic biology! We hope to have inspired some future biotechnologists!

iGEM Competition Info Session

Looking for research experience? Being able to work on a world-changing technology and participate in a world class competition with the opportunity to present your project in Paris?

We are recruiting UBCO's first iGEM team to represent our campus in the biggest synthetic biology competition in the world! Join us this upcoming Saturday to learn more about synbio, the competition, and how to be part of the team. We will provide a Q&A session at the end to get you ready to apply for this new challenge.

Read Like a Scientist #1

If you would like to learn together in a group about biotech and synbio while getting experience presenting a research project and reading article, this is a great opportunity for you!

Take a guided journey to read and analyze scientific journal articles. Learn how to interpret figures and data. Explore interesting papers in the realm of biotechnology and more!

Choose your Major

Come join us to hear some testimonies from upper-year students from the majors of Biology, Microbiology, Biochemistry and Molecular biology! Ask questions and learn from other majors to make a good decision on which major to declare. This event is specially aimed at 1st and 2nd year students that were affected by online classes.
