Program Mission

The Future Healthcare Scholars (FHS) Program welcomes high school students who have a passion for making a difference through healthcare. Whether your interest lies in medicine, research, or nursing, this program is your opportunity to explore that passion and bring it to life.

Here, you’ll learn from healthcare professionals and undergraduate mentors who once stood where you are now—curious, motivated, and eager to make an impact. Through their guidance and your dedication, you’ll discover new possibilities, gain confidence in your goals, and take the first steps toward becoming a future leader in healthcare.

Program Origins

The FHS Program was founded in 2025 by the leadership of the AMSA Chapter at Ohlone College as part of their commitment to community outreach and mentorship. Recognizing the lack of early exposure to healthcare careers for many high school students, AMSA leadership developed the FHS Program to help bridge that gap and give aspiring healthcare professionals the direction and support they need to be successful in their endeavors.

Dr. Laurie Issel-Tarver, PhD

This program is dedicated to the life and legacy of Ohlone Professor Dr. Laurie Issel-Tarver, who dedicated decades of her life to the formation of Ohlone's Biotechnology Program. Her dedication to science education, mentorship, and student growth continues to inspire the mission and spirit of the FHS Program. Dr. Issel-Tarver's legacy lives on through the students she taught, mentored, and lifted up to become the next generation of scientific minds.

The FHS Program is 100% online — zero in-person meetings! Each participant will connect with their assigned mentor once a week for a 1–1.5 hour Zoom session.
