Three principles guide my teaching: (1) make it engaging by challenging assumptions to facilitate critical thinking (i.e., presenting intuitive/counter-intuitive findings together while discussing the boundary conditions), (2) make it reinforced by providing multiple experiences through experiential learning (i.e., use of multiple teaching techniques and reinforced course design), and (3) make it consistent and coherent (i.e., a consistent course structure throughout the semester with a high degree of predictability and organization of the course).
I gained extensive teaching experience at Robert H. Smith School of Business, serving as :
an instructor/lecturer for an undergraduate (Managing People and Organizations) and a graduate class (Ethical Leadership) for six sections and 326 students
a course designer for a newly launched master's in management program
a teaching assistant for two MBA classes (Leadership and Team Work/Ethical Leadership) for 13 sections with 333 students
My teaching philosophy has contributed to very high evaluation scores (Fall 2022: 3.91/4, Spring 2023: 3.74/4, Winter 2024: 4/4) and extremely positive feedback in my formal teaching evaluations (that can be seen below).
I am interested in teaching Organization Behavior and Human Resources classes, such as introduction classes, leadership, teams, and business ethics, at both undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as method courses and doctoral seminars. I am also eager to develop new courses, such as a class on leadership and improvisation for graduate programs. Additionally, I aim to apply my teaching philosophy to different formats and technologies, including online and asynchronous courses, and to lead degree-granting programs that increase the general public’s accessibility to higher education.
Some comments I received from my students from my Formal Course Evaluations:
Oguz is one of the best teachers I have had at UMD. He had a consistent and engaging course structure and truly cared about his students.
I enjoyed the lectures the most. I thought Oguz did a great job engaging everyone every single class. The structure of the course was very helpful. I liked the lectures and group discussions (applied the material and got to connect with fellow classmates).
I found the class format engaging. For long lectures, I usually feel mentally strained about 1 hour in. I feel the variation in the lecture with the presentations at the beginning, lectures with Q&A style, and group discussions at the end kept me engaged with the class. I found I remembered concepts better for exams because of the different methods used to learn the content.
I think the way the instructor approached the method of delivery and content was essential. By making the course more casual and related to real life, it allowed me to learn more comfortably and see how the course content was directly related to my future professional experiences
The quizzes, the class discussion questions, the reflection post - all of these were easy enough to do but really did a good job reinforcing the class material. The instructor was also very compassionate and understanding.
I liked the way the course was set up and the way that he taught. It was effective and I liked that it followed the same outline every week. He made lectures fun and entertaining.
All assignments were on a weekly basis, so we always knew what to expect each week. There was a lot of structure which I loved.
His humor and attitude made me look forward to each Tuesday and Thursday. Truly the best professor I have had at UMD so far.
The structure of Oguz's course was helpful for me to learn. The environment was very engaging with regular discussion. I like how the learning was split between the textbook and lectures.
I think the environment created in the class room was one where everyone was there to learn and the class content was broken up occasionally with stories and relatable real life examples.
