Depending on the language you want, check out Apertium for offline machine translation through the terminal. It seems to focus mostly on Romance languages (ES, FR, PT, CAT, OCC..), but looks like they are slowly adding various new languages.
So Argos put up a reasonable fight, but Google Translate was basically strictly better. Some of it was luck, and some was perhaps due to the slight age of the text. But a large part was because Google Translate is curreently better.

This feature has existed in Chrome for ages, but unlike Google's browser, which sends the data to its servers, Firefox's automatic translation feature uses on-device translation. The latter is much better for your privacy, and works offline.
