Some writers may struggle to find academic sources -- searching Google can often bring up results that are locked behind a paywall or otherwise inaccessible. By using the UIC library website, writers can access databases like Google Scholar and Academic Search Complete, and ensure that the sources they find are reliable. Also, because they are logged in through the library website, all paywalls that UIC students have access to will automatically unlock.
As a tutor, no one will expect you to know every rule of every style guide a writer will come in with. However, you are expected to help to the best of your ability. This website provides handouts, sample papers, and links to helpful websites for a variety of style guides. You can download these handouts and upload them in a CRF at the end of a session, or provide links to the google docs so the writer can download them themselves.
If you want to provide a writer with these recourses, be sure to point out what parts would be most helpful. Providing a handout without guidance to the specific sections a writer needs may be overwhelming for them. Whether you're uploading a document along with your email appointment, looking at the handout in person, or talking it over online, be sure to go through the resources with your writer. This makes the resources more accessible after the session.
Below, you'll find various guides for specific citation styles, but if you want more information or you're looking for a style guide that isn't included here, try the Purdue Owl website!
MLA is typically used for papers in the humanities. It is the default style guide for First Year Writing Courses. See the pdfs below for quick guides to writing an MLA paper.
APA is most often used in STEM papers. It emphasizes recent and credible sources. See the pdfs below for quick guides to writing an APA paper.
CMS is used in humanities papers as well as papers for social sciences. There are two types of CMS citations. The Notes-Bibliography System (NB), which uses footnotes for intext citations, is below. The Author-Date System is provided in the "less commonly used style guides" section.

It's important to know that there are many more style guides that students may need to know. Here, we list a few websites to learn about specific, less common style guides. However, if a style guide here is not listed, remember you can always ask your writer if they are using a style guide resource for their paper.
