Odysseus vs The Trio of Chaos

[Odysseus and his newly-recruited men push their way through the last of the vegetation to find themselves on a sandy beach.]

"Okay, everyone, this is it! The path to Ithaca is into the sea, and the gods provided us the means! It is time for this crew and me to get to work! Men, I see many of you carry supplies from Sindbad's ships. Those tools will come in handy now, but even that beeswax and tar might be useful later on for waterproofing the boat. We must use your axes and blades to fell 20 trees and carve them into planks. The rest of you must take the spare rope and begin to tie it into rigging! As for sails, I took the liberty to tear down a few of Circe's tapestries before we left, hehe. Let's get to work!"

[The men work rapidly, assembling the ship per Odysseus' instructions. First, they finish the hull, and they add the rigging and sails next.]

"Ahoy! We have got us a sea-worthy vessel! Let us board our creation and set sail into the deep blue!"

[The men sail deep into the ocean until the island is barely visible as a speck on the far horizon. As the ship nears some tall cliffs, Odysseus sees something unusual.]

"This water is beautiful, the sea breeze feels crisp and salty, and the gods grace us with the wind at our backs! But wait, I see movement ahead! It is a raft, and it heads toward the coast of those cliffs! Oh no...those cliffs are the home of the deadly Sirens! Their song will drive any man toward madness. Sirens attract men, kill them without mercy, and devour them immediately! Quickly, men, grab some beeswax and stuff your ears. Then, grab the oars and row madly for that raft! We must save those men!"

[After stuffing their ears, the men catch up to the raft and suddenly become very frantic, shouting and putting their hands to their heads.]

"Mighty Zeus! There is Sindbad with two more members of his crew! Do not fear; I will rescue him!"

[Odysseus manages to use hand gestures to convey to his crew that they must tie a rope to his waist and allow him to jump off the ship and grab hold of the men. Odysseus switches cameras to a forehead-mounted lens, slings his satchel over his shoulder, and jumps in.]

"I have reached the raft! Sindbad! Men! Stop at once! Oh, no, those Sirens look vicious! Their pointed teeth, yellowed claws, and leering smirks are all but invisible to those who hear their seductive song! STOP!"

[The men do not stop, but Odysseus is prepared for this. He reaches into his satchel and grabs some pre-made beeswax stubs. He pulls himself onto the raft and stuffs them into the ears of Sindbad and the other two men. The men immediately look around in shock as they come out of their trance.]

"Okay, men! Now that you have regained your senses, grab onto me! The men aboard the ship will pull us back to safety!"

[The men cannot hear Odysseus, but they understand his gestures and see the Sirens as their true monstrous selves. They grab ahold, and the crew heaves them back to the boat. After some vigorous sailing, they exit the range of the Siren song and remove the beeswax.]

"Alright, men, I see you are quite happy to be reunited with Sindbad and your fellow crew members. I am glad we were able to save them, but let us not lose sight of what is to come! Sindbad, I know you are my rival, but you are indeed knowledgeable. Tell us about the next creatures we face."

"Aye, thank you, Odysseus. I would surely have perished and never seen my crew again without your heroic efforts. I am in your debt."

[Odysseus points at the camera, nods his head in agreement, and then flexes his biceps. Sindbad continues to speak.]

"We are in the territory of the multi-headed Scylla and the whirlpool behemoth Charybdis. As you can see, the sky above is already turning grey and black, and white-crested waves are buffeting our vessel. We must keep our heads down and row along the edge of the cliffs, away from the whirlpool. Beware, Scylla lives in those cliffs, and she will be hungry. Odysseus and I will draw our weapons and try to fight off those heads! Let us prepare, soldiers!"

[The crew sit along the rowing benches and cover their heads with the sails. They begin rowing alongside the rocky cliffs. Odysseus and Sindbad remain exposed with swords at the ready and bows across their backs.]

"OY, Odysseus here again. The wind is fierce, and salty spray fills the air. The roar of Charybdis is almost deafening, but Scylla still remains hidden!"

[At these words, a gigantic green head smashes into the deck right in front of Sindbad.]

"ODYSSEUS! Scylla is here! Arms up!"

"I am too far away for my sword. It is time to put my archery skills to the test!"

[Odysseus draws his bow and nocks an arrow, sending it whizzing through the eyeball of Scylla's first head.]

"Direct hit! WOOO!"

[Sindbad draws his sword as five more heads come crashing into the boat. He swings with precision, slicing cleanly through the first two.]

"Here I come, Sindbad! This Scylla can't handle the two of us!"

[The two warriors sprint back and forth across the deck, dodging fearsome teeth and countering with their blades. While this occurs, the crew rows madly past jagged rocks, trying desperately to avoid the hurricane-level strength of Charybdis.]

"Ahoy! I can see the maw of Charybdis! There isn't a chasm larger in all of Ithaca! We must make it past!"

[The crew rows even harder, and the boat clears the cliffs. Sunlight breaches the storm clouds ahead.]

"THAT'S HOW IT'S DONE! Look alive, men, we made it! Now, TO ITHACA!

Author's Note: This retelling is based on a much darker original story. In the source story, Odysseus and what remains of his own crew know they will pass the Sirens, but Odysseus wants to hear them. His crew members all stuff their ears with beeswax and tie Odysseus to the mast so he can hear. After passing the Sirens, they come across Charybdis. Odysseus tells the men to just keep rowing, but he chooses to not tell them about Scylla. The story in the UnTextbook ends as Scylla eats six of Odysseus' men alive. I wanted a more upbeat, fit-for-TV story, so I chose to make several key changes. For starters, Odysseus is alone as a solo survivor, but I knew he would need a crew for this scene, so I had him save Sindbad's crew from Circe so they could help him build and pilot a boat. Next, I had Odysseus rescue Sindbad from the Sirens so the two could fight together. Finally, I made sure that the crew members would survive while Odysseus and Sindbad have an epic battle against Scylla! I chose the cover image for this page because I felt that the dark colors and textured brush strokes captured the setting for this dramatic showdown with the three creatures. I hope you enjoyed the climactic end to this episode of Odysseus vs Wild!
