The Contest

The contest is open to current ODU students who studied abroad.

Entries from faculty, professional videographers, and individuals involved in planning or judging the contest may be considered for "honorable mention" but are ineligible to win, place, or receive major prizes.

Entries must:

  • be the original work of the entrant;
  • include content taken on an ODU study abroad program;
  • be digital and between 30 seconds and 5 minutes in duration;
  • include video content shot horizontally only;
  • not use material (especially music) that is subject to copyright fees. [See Creative Commons, a system, built upon current copyright law, which allows one to legally use “some rights reserved” music, movies, images, and other content — all for free.]

What themes can I choose from to focus my video?

Submitted videos must focus on at least one theme established in the contest rules. Entrants are encouraged to be creative with their theme(s). No matter which theme(s) is selected, videos should capture content true to the entrant’s experience. Approved themes are as follows...

Academics:

For example, record highlights from a class field trip, or show your "global classroom"

Life Impact:

For example, show how your study abroad experience has shaped your life or career goals

Landscapes and Scenes:

For example, give your audience a glimpse into the structures and scenes around your location

Culture:

For example, tell a story about local people, customs, a festival, food, and/or clothing that is a part of the local culture

Monarchs Abroad:

For example, include Monarch merchandise and show your ODU pride while abroad

Day in the Life:

For example, let your audience see what a typical day studying abroad looks like for you - from your morning commute and where you attend class, to what you eat for lunch, where you live, and more

Do I retain the copyrights to my work?

Rights are retained by the artist. By signing and submitting the Official Entry Form, however, the artist grants Old Dominion University royalty-free use, including the creation and use of derivative works of all entered videos. The artist, in turn, grants Old Dominion University the ability to edit and use partial or whole clips from all entered videos. When possible and where appropriate, the artist will be credited.

What is the Model Release Policy?

Entrants should always be sensitive to the privacy of human subjects. In general, video taken in public places are suitable. However, in cases where the privacy of the individuals shown may appear to have been infringed upon, winning entrants may be asked to provide model release forms. Such cases would include but are not necessarily limited to ones where the artist appears to have intruded without permission on another's seclusion, making private facts public, or making the viewer believe something that isn't true about the subject. In order to facilitate full posting and publication options, artists must be prepared to provide release forms upon request.

Entry deadline: 5 p.m. EST, June 1, 2019
