The Celadon Quail are a special variety of Coturnix Quail who carry a rare, recessive gene (the celadon gene) which causes their eggs to be a gorgeous blue color (often with brown speckles!).
We will have 4 kinds available:
the traditional brown and white speckled eggs (Coturnix japonica) (newly hatched or 2 weeks old)
Celadon Blue egg layers (Coturnix japonica). (newly hatched or 2 weeks old)
Texas A & M Coturnix Quail (Coturnix japonica). (newly hatched)
Jumbo Egg Laying Coturnix Quails (Coturnix japonica). (newly hatched)
Celadon quail are a variety of coturnix quail (Coturnix japonica) that lay beautiful blue eggs instead of brown and white speckled eggs like our other coturnix quail. They carry a gene nicknamed “the celadon gene” that results in this beautiful anomaly. They come in a variety of different color patterns including pharaoh (typical brown), white, tuxedo, cinnamon, and others. They are prolific layers and mature in just 8 weeks time.
The Celadon Gene sometimes does not express itself in subsequent generations. The majority of quail chicks hatched from a blue egg will end up also laying a blue egg. About 10%-20% of the quail chicks hatched from blue eggs will end up laying a black and white speckled egg. However, they still carry the genetics for the blue egg and their offspring or their offsprings offspring are likely to produce blue eggs.
Raising Coturnix Quail is a great way to incorporate a protein onto the property. Domesticated quail offer a tasty meat option and are prolific egg layers. Not to mention, quail are an ideal option for those with a smaller property, and are extremely easy to raise.
Because of their quick growth Coturnix quail mature quickly. Egg laying begins as early as 7 weeks, laying up to 300 eggs per hen a year. This variety can be butchered for meat between 7-10 weeks of age producing 10-14 ounces of meat per quail.
The eggs are considered a delicacy and bring in more money than chicken eggs if you choose to sell them. If you decide to raise quail, you’ve got to try your hand at making Little Devils. They’re also excellent pickled as a high-protein snack. It takes four quail eggs to equal one chicken egg. I highly recommend a pair of egg scissors so you don’t have to crack a bunch of eggs.
Quail eggs are allergen-free so if you have trouble eating chicken eggs, quail eggs might be right for you.
You can have males in your flock without annoying your neighbors (which is great for us that live on a non-traditional homestead). Males have a beautiful cooing crow that is nothing short of musical.
They cost less than traditional poultry because they are smaller so they use less feed and bedding. In fact, with wire bottom cages there is no bedding to deal with. Most quail require about 4 square feet of floor space per bird, which is less than half of the amount of space you would need for chickens.
